Astute Destinations – Rome
Rome is the third most visited city in Europe, and the fifteenth-most visited city globally, thanks to its unique history. It draws people from all over the globe who are eager to see the city's great structures and ancient sites, as well as its famous food and bustling environment.
When visiting the Colosseum, tourists may readily visualise the gladiators fighting for their lives in the arena, cheered on by the audience. In the Circus Maximus, visitors may imagine chariots colliding to win the race, and in the Roman Forum, they can imagine Roman public life.
THINGS TO SEE AND DO
Explore the Colosseum
Even though the queue of visitors sometimes appears interminable, the Colosseum is not to be missed. It is over 2,000 years old and was the Roman Empire's greatest amphitheatre (it could hold 50,000 people). The admission fee is 12 EUR.
Tour Vatican City
Don't leave Rome without visiting Vatican City to view the Pope's residence, St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the many museums. Tickets are priced at 17 EUR. (Due to the Basilica's rigorous dress rule, please dress modestly.)
Eat Your Way Around Trastevere
This is one of our favourite parts of town to visit. The meandering lanes are beautiful, and there is some excellent cuisine to be found here. Spend some time walking about – you won't regret! Because there are fewer visitors here, it has a much more real Roman atmosphere!
WHAT TO EAT
Simply said, Rome is a fantastic place to eat. Its inhabitants are well-versed in the concepts of freshness and authenticity, and they may be rather demanding when it comes to the quality of the foods they are given.
Most restaurants in the city centre provide basic Italian menus focusing on classic Roman foods, while a few more daring establishments have recently opened. There are also various restaurants serving a range of regional cuisines.
The city also has a plethora of excellent pizzerias that serve thin, crispy-baked Roman pizza from wood-fired ovens. In recent years, a handful of successful exponents of the thicker, airier, Neapolitan style have also achieved favour.
WHERE TO STAY? | Best Hotels
There is plenty of lodging in Rome. The broad selection of hotels in the city centre has improved significantly in recent years, with several new boutique hotels and modern B&Bs appearing.
Rooms of Rome
Alda Fendi interrupted her design career to establish an art foundation; this hotel/gallery is the next phase. It's an 18th-century palace reduced to the brick bone and reconstructed by Jean Nouvel under the Palatine Hill and near the Bocca Della Verità (immortalised in Roman Holiday). The balcony offers breathtaking views of the Palatine, and visitors have access to the hotel's exhibits.
Palazzo Manfredi
No other hotel in the city can provide such a breathtaking view as this contemporary, quiet hotel located just across the Colosseum. Enjoy the views from the rooftop restaurant or reserve a front-facing room to sleep next to one of the world's most iconic structures.
Residenza Ruspoli Bonaparte
Looking for a hotel appropriate for a king or queen? This is the destination for you — Napoleon Bonaparte III's boyhood house, former French Emperor. The marble staircase is an architectural wonder, as are the coffered ceilings and silky damask walls.
THE BEST BARS
People are having a great time in Rome since Romulus and Remus chose to settle here, so thirsty tourists can expect some truly fantastic times when it comes to the top bars in Rome. The hackneyed cliché of 'traditional but contemporary' is alive and well here, with old-school enotecas (wine bars) coexisting alongside forward-thinking mixologists and craft beer taprooms. To say the least, the bar scene in Rome is growing. Following are the best Roman bars:
Il Goccetto
Salotto 42
Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fà
Stravinskij Bar
Bar San Calisto
Drink Kong
The Jerry Thomas Project
Terrazza Borromini
Bar del Fico
Litro
